Clara Viñas

Clara Viñas earned Bachelor’s Degrees in Chemistry and Pharmacy, completing her PhD in Pharmacy under Prof. Teixidor. She directed the Environmental Sabadell City-Council Laboratory before joining ICMAB-CSIC, advancing from Tenured Scientist (1991) to Research Professor (2006), Professor “Ad Honorem” since 2022. A leading figure in boron cluster chemistry, her work has focused on developing synthetic methods and structural characterization of boron clusters (carboranes and metallacarboranes) for applications in catalysis, environmental science (wastewater and radioactive waste treatment), and medicine (antibiotics, antifungals, anticancer agents).

Contributed to revising boron cluster nomenclature for IUPAC (2012–2016). Combining her expertise in chemistry and pharmacy, Prof. Viñas was elected to the Academia Europaea (nº 5772) in June 2021. Scientific Excellence Award from the Catalan Society of Chemistry (2022). Distinguished Research Career Award from the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (2024).

Ranked among the top 2% most-cited-chemists by Stanford University–Elsevier for career-long and 2020–2024 periods.
