Professor Detlef Gabel has studied in Germany and Sweden and worked in Germany and the USA. After retiring from the University of Bremen he is at Jacobs University Bremen (now Constructor University).
His focus is, since may decades, on the chemistry of dodecaborate, with an emphasis on linking it with organic substituents. The goal is to use the special properties of this boron cluster for materials and for pharmaceutical purposes. Past projects have included boron neutron capture therapy (which was introduced to Europe by him), and dyes for ocular surgery (which are now on the market).
